LS Range

The LS range is a versatile, high-performance, surge protection devices for use in a wide variety of equipment in industrial and commercial applications.

The fast acting circuitry will protect equipment from damaging electrical transients and disturbances. Fully automatic in operation the LS range reacts immediately, clamping voltage surges without causing undue leakage losses under normal operation. No operator intervention is required as they reset automatically and are completely maintenance free.

Series and parallel versions are available. The LS10N-xxxx-S models automatically disconnect power to the load under fault conditions, while the LS12N-xxxx-P devices are parallel connected that disconnect themselves from the load under fault conditions, leaving power to the load.

The space savings footprint allow the LS range to be mounted in confined locations while providing protection the Line/Neutral, Line/Ground, and Neutral/Ground modes. The LS range is also a UL1449 4th Edition Recognized Component. With ingress protection to IP66 (NEMA 4X) the LS range can be installed in most locations and carries an unrivaled “no fuss” 10 year manufacturer’s warranty.

RF protection- Legacy

The MA3350 is available for either AC or DC applications. The AC & DC versions are rated to a full 50kA (8/20µs) with the DC version also rated at 15kA (10/350µs). In the AC three phase unit there are four (4) such modes giving a total unit rating of 200kA. These units carry a suite of diagnostics that monitors each component of the suppression circuit. Each unit has positive indication showing both the presence of power and the status of the unit. Red and green LEDs leave the user in no doubt of the MA3350’s operational readiness. Remote monitoring of the MA3350 is possible using the standard voltage free contacts.

MTL830C Temperature Multiplexer system

MTL830C multiplexer with Modbus® outputs provide a cost-effective alternative to single-loop isolation. The cost of installed wiring is reduced by up to 50% by communicating the input of multiple hazardous-area sensors over a single twisted pair data highway. Further savings are achieved by reducing the number of inputs to the host, cabinet space and weight. A multiplexer transmitter, mounted in the hazardous area, caters for thermocouple, RTD and mV analogue inputs. MTL Data Surge Tester

MTL Data Surge Tester is a versatile and compact, bench-top test device designed to give performance status of data communication surge protectors. This portable, rugged tester analyses the surge protector’s continuity and leakage current, making these tests quick and easy during routine maintenance. LEDs illuminate to indicate surge module health, allowing users to quickly determine whether the surge protection device has failed or degraded in performance to an unacceptable level.

This simple to operate surge tester gives a “go” or “no go” (pass or fail) status and is designed to test data communication surge protectors that have a voltage rating of 7V, 16V, 32V or 55V. The continuity function of the tester can be used to analyse any voltage-rated data surge protector. It also features a custom receptacle for the testing MTL SD Modular surge protection modules. These tests validate the integrity of the surge protection system, ensuring safety and a continuous high-level of protection.

An MTL8000 node uses a Bus Interface Module (BIM) to communicate with the host controller via a local area network (LAN). Different BIMs can be chosen to operate with a range of popular fieldbus protocols. The BIM mounts on a carrier and receives all of its communication and power links from it. The BIM uses the RS485 communications standard. Other alternatives are RS422, by changing switches (where available) on the carrier, or RS232 by fitting an in-line converter. Switch options sometimes offer alternative methods for terminating the LAN. Some BIMs also have a second LAN connection to maintain communications in the event of damage occurring to the main communications link.

The MTL SD Modular (SDM) is based upon the proven reliability of the well-established MTL SD range and adds additional features such as modularity for ease of maintenance with the proven full hybrid surge design, delivering the highest 20kA level of protection within a compact 7mm, modular design.

Available in a range of voltages 7V,16V,32V & 55V with a current capacity of 700mA, the MTL SDM addresses a wide variety of applications and represents a step forward in surge protection designed for process control environments.

Modular design concept for ease of maintenance

 

All the active surge protection components are contained within the pluggable module, allowing quick removal without disconnecting the wiring. Replacement costs are reduced, too, as only the modular part needs to be changed.

Compact 7mm footprint for high packing density

The MTL SDM range offers the same slim-line 7mm footprint of that of the MTL SD range, increasing the packing density, resulting in saving both space and cost, which potentially reduces the number of cabinets needed.

Make before break for signal continuity

 

The optional innovative ‘make before break’ design ensures uninterrupted signal and loop protection upon removal or replacement of the surge module during maintenance. The signal to DCS shows no interruption avoiding nuisance alarms.

LED diagnostics for quick, visual fault indication

A diagnostic LED option is available to provide a clear, visual indication of a failed module so that faults can be identified and rectified immediately.

Fuse and/or disconnect for ease of testing and commissioning

Additional options include a Fuse to give extra protection against fault currents and a convenient disconnect method for isolating field circuitry without module removal.

Upgrading made easy

The MTL SDM is backwards compatible with the MTL SD range which means users can quickly and easily upgrade to the MTL SDM when next carrying out maintenance upgrades and take advantage of these great new features.

MTL data surge tester to ensure continuous high-level protection

The MTL data surge tester is a versatile and compact, bench-top device designed to give performance status of data communication surge protectors. Continuity and current leakage tests are made quick and easy during routine maintenance or troubleshooting, with LED’s to indicate surge module health, validating the integrity of the surge protection to ensure safety and continuous high-level protection on your systems.

Intrinsically Safe Power Supplies

The 949x-PS range of MTL intrinsically safe (IS) isolated power supplies are ideal for providing power to instrumentation in hazardous process areas. They offer a wide range of different IS output voltages, ranging from 4.8V - 17.7V, offering flexibility of options to best suit a variety of applications. The 9492-PS-PLUS is the preferred method for supplying the 946x-ET range of MTL IS Ethernet devices to provide direct power or IS Power over Ethernet (PoExTM), a method which allows a single cable to provide both the data connection and electrical power to devices, in turn, reducing installation costs.

MTL ExLAN

The MTL ExLAN is a simple and compact Intrinsically Safe (IS) 10/100Mbps Ethernet Interface intended to simplify OEM product design and certification.

The MTL ExLAN module can be integrated into your IS instrumentation design to power and communicate with the device over an IS Ethernet network. K6050AP - Hydrogen Purity Monitor for Power Station Alternator and Turbines Purge (Transportable)

Application

Modern power station installations often use Hydrogen gas, with its excellent thermal conductivity properties, as the coolant medium for high capacity turbo generators or alternators; with the efficient performance and safe operation of the plant being critically linked to the gas quality used. During the commissioning and decommissioning of the alternator it is essential that the hydrogen is safely introduced and purged. Therefore, air must first be purged from the system by an inert gas such as carbon dioxide (CO2). The hydrogen coolant is then introduced and replaces the purge gas. To decommission the turbogenerator the purge sequence is reversed. During daily operation, the hydrogen purity must also be monitored to ensure that the H2 has not become contaminated by air leakages. Not only will air ingress produce a potentially explosive atmosphere but it will also affect the viscosity of the H2 coolant gas, increasing drag and hence, windage losses. The Alternator Purge Gas Monitor series measures all stages of the fill-purge cycle as well as measuring hydrogen purity during normal operation.

System Description

The K6050AP gas analyser is a complete instrument, which is the portable equivalent of the K1650AP. The K6050AP is supplied in a rugged case complete with rechargeable batteries capable of lasting for a full purge cycle. A sample pump, 0 to 1 Volt recording output, flowmeter and needle valve are all included as standard.

The K6050AP analyser has three pre-configured ranges to enable measurement of hydrogen purity plus all stages of the purge cycle: 0 to 100% CO2 in Air; 0 to 100% H2 in CO2 and 90 to 100% H2 in Air.

The DFR30IS Intrinsically Safe Display Facia is a backlit LED illuminated display approved for use in zone 1 and zone 2 hazardous areas and has been ATEX certified to EN50014:1997 and EN50020:2002, Group II, Category 2G, EEx ia IIC T4. This product is often combined with RTK Instruments’ range of Alarm Annunciators and certified Interfaces to provide a complete Alarm Management System with displays in both safe and hazardous areas.

Three window sizes are available (30 x 30mm, 60 x 30mm and 60 x 60mm) in a choice of six colours. As the DFR30IS Display Facia is modular in design, displays can be created in almost any format, arrangement and size enabling the user to have exactly the configuration needed for a specific application. The unit can be supplied complete with film legends to a customer’s requirement or RTK can supply a template to allow users to create their own legends locally.

As the DFR30IS is often used for alarm indication, pushbuttons can be included within the display itself to acknowledge and reset alarms. These are normally fitted in the bottom right-hand cell.

The P861 LED Lamp provides visual on/off indication of process conditions in both safe and hazardous areas. Available in a choice of six super-bright colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and white), they are ideally suited as part of a panel mounting indicator or illuminated pushbutton assembly.

The P861 itself is a standard BA9s intrinsically safe LED lamp which can be supplied as part of a pilot light or illuminated pushbutton or alternatively supplied separately to be used in any standard switch or lamp assembly.

With the LED lamp being current limited to take a maximum of only 20 mA, it is possible to drive two lamps from a single IIC interface without any affect on the brightness.

With the LED’s low power consumption, low heat dissipation and long life expectancy, the P861 is an ideal indicator for safe and hazardous areas alike.

The DA180, having a 66mm diameter lens, provides extremely clear visual indication of process control conditions from a distance and from the side. Lenses are available in six super-bright colours and feature an integral current regulator to limit the current to 20mA. This ensures that all colours are matched to obtain consistent brightness across the range. Up to two LED Clusters can be driven from a single 11C power source. The lamps are designed to provide a minimum of 100,000 hours of service life.

The DA180 Giant LED Clusters are ATEX Certified to EX11 2G, EEx ia IIC T4 and are suitable for zones 1 and 2. When used in hazardous areas, the LED Clusters must be powered through suitable intrinsically safe Isolators or Barriers.

The LED Clusters can be supplied as loose parts or pre-mounted in a stainless steel or polycarbonate IP65 rated box ready for immediate installation on site.

The DA170 range of LED Clusters provides visual on/off indication of process conditions in safe and hazardous areas. Available in six super-bright colours - red, green, amber, orange, blue and white - they are standard 22.5mm diameter and seal to IP65 to the panel door.

The DA170 Intrinsically Safe LED Clusters are ATEX Certified to Ex II 1G, EEx ia IIC T4 and are suitable for zones 0, 1 and 2 and for all gas groups.

All six colours are fully current limited and take only 20mA. All are matched for equal brightness including the white and blue versions.

In hazardous areas it is possible to combine LEDs from a single Intrinsically Safe interface, two for IIC interfaces and four with a IIB interface.

The standard LED Cluster can also be supplied fully mounted in stainless steel boxes ready for immediate mounting on-site.

With the LED’s lower power consumption, lower heat dissipation and long life expectancy the DA170 is an ideal standard indicator for safe and hazardous areas alike.

The DA135 LED Beacon provides an ultra-bright LED flash to warn of abnormal events in any hazardous area.

It is ATEX certified to Ex II 1G for use in any zone. The ruggedised and encapsulated enclosure is sealed to IP65 to ensure reliable operation in harsh environments and is backed up with our 5 year warranty.

Available in five equally bright colours including white and blue, the DA135 Beacon is often used as a simple flashing warning signal but there are also additional unique display features that allow the user to show additional information. These include single, double and triple flash selection and a dual colour version.

DB5 Intrinsically Safe Sounder

The DB5 Intrinsically Safe Sounder is ideally suited for use in areas of high ambient noise, with a sound output greater than 100dBA. ATEX certified to Ex II 1G EX ia IIC T4 , the DB5 offers 26 tones, user selectable using a 5-way DIL switch. A second tone can be obtained by switching the negative supply to a third terminal. For extreme noise levels, the Sounder can be linked to the RTK DA135 Intrinsically Safe Beacon to combine audible and visual warnings. The IP65 enclosure makes the DB5 Sounder ideal for the harsh environmental conditions found offshore as well as those of the onshore oil, gas and chemical industries.

The 9000TS is built on a rugged hardware platform suitable for the most severe of industrial environments found in the power and process industries. This unit will provide true time-stamping of event occurrence to a resolution of 1ms. Using the synchronisation input this time can also be related to real time.

Combined with the integrated alarm annunciator features it is possible to build a system that will capture, record and display events and alarms both for immediate action on the plant and for later analysis to find the prime cause of the failure.

SA5 Safe Area Multitone Sounder

The SA5 Safe Area Multitone Sounder is a high specification, cost effective alarm Sounder with a sound output of up to 112dBA, ideally suited to areas of high ambient noise.

The unit has a choice of 32 tones, including all the major international standards, which are user selectable using a DIL switch during installation. A second tone is available, which can be switched in by the connection of a third wire to the sounder. The IP65 rated casing provides a high level of durability and resistance to environmental conditions. All connections are made to the base and the sounder head twists and locks into position on commissioning, avoiding wiring and connection problems.

24V DC Power Supply Units

For the many control and instrumentation products which require a safe supply of 24V DC, RTK Instruments can supply a broad range of power supplies to suit different applications. Failing into two distinct categories, linear/unregulated and switch model stabilised, the designs maintain the high reliability required for demanding industrial applications.

The switch mode power supplies are generally smaller and offer the most cost effective solution for low power applications, up to about 5OW. The unregulated supplies are ideally suited to the higher current outputs typically encountered on alarm annunciator applications. Using RTK Linden DA149 intrinsically safe relays, control signals and other data can be exchanged between items of equipment in hazardous areas and between hazardous and safe-area equipment. The range includes four models, two of which are designed for safe-area location and two of which can be located within hazardous areas.

Since the relays need very little power, they do not affect operation of other equipment to which they are connected. Additionally, as inputs and outputs are classified as “simple apparatus”, system certification is not needed.

The slimline units are universal DIN-rail mounting and can be supplied pre-mounted in standard safe-area or flameproof enclosures as required.

The lightweight stainless steel construction gives a compact and simple to install modular unit which can easily be expanded by the addition of extra alarm cards.

Maintenance can be carried out live without the necessity of ‘gas checks’ or prior shutdown. Unlike flameproof, purged and type ‘N’ systems, installation is simple and relatively low cost.

Power to the annunciator is supplied from the safe area through a single Intrinsically Safe interface for up to 32 channels.

With the addition of a number of ancillary devices a complete intrinsically safe alarm and control package can be provided.

TP-AC range

The TP-AC range of surge protection devices uniquely provides a level of protection for AC powered, field -mounted transmitters that is far in excess of the optional transient protection facilities available from the transmitter manufacturers - and achieved without any additional wiring modifications or costly additions.

The TP protection network consists of high power, solid state electronics and a gas-filled discharge tube (GDT) capable of diverting 20kA impulses. MTL Process Junction Boxes are designed for mounting fieldbus wiring components and TI multiplexers. They offer plenty of space for termination and wiring, making it easy to install and maintain the fieldbus system.

Available in painted 409 stainless steel (FCS75xx series) and rated IP66, provide the highest levels of corrosion resistance for the harshest process environments.

Pre-drilled for glanding, they can also be supplied with stainless steel, nickel-plated brass or plastic glands fitted, as required. They also include an earthing stud and a breather plug. The Process JBs are suitable for Zone 2 and Zone 1 intrinsically safe applications.

The Fieldbus Monitor, FBT-3, is used to examine a live Fieldbus network without interfering with its operation. The Monitor is intended for commissioning and for maintenance personnel to verify network operation or to troubleshoot an errant network. Some of the parameters that it displays are: DC voltage, noise, link master signal strength, number of devices on the segment, etc. Reference the data sheet below for complete specifications.

MTL4854 Multi-modem multiplexer

For applications where communication paths with several field devices need to be established and maintained in parallel, the MTL4854 HART® multiplexer is the ideal product to use. This is a module that has the same 32 channel capacity as the MTL4850 for connection to field devices but now has four HART modems rather than just one.

Essentially this gives 4 x 8 channel multiplexers in one compact housing, enabling simultaneous communication with several field devices through one serial link. One particular use for this is during partial-stroke testing of valve positioners, where the ability to maintain access to other connected devices while the multiplexer would otherwise be locked enables plant monitoring to continue.

The MTL4851/52 HART connection system is the system of choice for unrivalled flexibility. Based on 16 channel modularity the system can be easiliy expanded to cover up to 7936 HART devices on one network. The flexibility of the MTL4851/52 and its ability to communicate with any of the Instrument Management Software (IMS) packages on the market today allows us to offer the optimum solution for any application - both general purpose and Intrinsically Safe.

The HART multiplexer provides the brains of the system and consists of a combination of two modules, the MTL4851 - HART communications module and MTL4852 - HART interface module. They provide the HART data interface between smart devices in the field and HART instrument management software running on a PC. The modules, which mount on to a range of HART backplanes, connect to the field devices via either HART connection units or IS backplanes depending on the application.

Our MTL Intrinsically safe (I.S.) wireless solutions provide completely safe wireless operation in hazardous areas. Products are live workable, meaning that in many situations a gas clearance certificate is not required to work on the equipment and can reduce costs when performing maintenance, installation, testing or replacing devices. The hazardous area access point provides 802.11a/b/g connectivity, a standard which is widely compatible with end devices and can be used for transferring Ethernet data over the air. Features such as I.S. power over Ethernet (PoEx), WDS repeaters and encryption ensure secure transfer of data with the ability to deploy wireless systems over a wide area.

NEW Ex ic Adaptor for Ex ic spurs

The recent removal of the ‘Ex nL’ (energy limited) Ex protection method from the IEC 60079-15 standard, and the introduction of intrinsic safety protection level Ex ic, will begin to drive operators of fieldbus networks to look for solutions that support Ex ic spurs.

Our new F30 Ex ic adaptor enables such networks to be assembled, when used in conjunction with 9180 Series 8-segment redundant power supplies and F300 Series Megablock device couplers.

Typically, one F30 adaptor is used with each fieldbus segment, and is installed with the Megablock in the field enclosure. Power to the Ex ic segments is provided by 9192-FP modules installed on the 9180 series power supply carriers. When connected to suitably certified fieldbus instruments in Zone 2 hazardous areas, the spurs may be live-worked in accordance with normal intrinsic safety procedures. This allows field devices to be connected to the network while it is energised in the hazardous area. Unlike competing products in which the trunk must be treated as a ‘partial’ intrinsic safety circuit, our solution provides clear separation between the non-arcing (Ex nA) trunk and the intrinsically safe (Ex ic) spurs, thereby avoiding complex rules for wiring in the marshalling cabinet. Further, it is compatible with all host H1 control systems that comply with basic electrical safety standards, avoiding ambiguous rules for host system approvals.

The MAPtest 3050 is one of the most advanced modified atmosphere packaging analysers of its type. Controlled by a microprocessor and housed in a stainless steel bench-top enclosure, it is designed to be used by all types of personnel.

Operation is simplicity itself. Ease of use and neatness of operation were two of the key design requirements. Equally at home in the research lab and the shop floor, no exceptional skills are required to operate the instrument and precision results can be flawlessly produced by everyone.

Advanced sensors measure the carbon dioxide and oxygen content of the sample. Their outputs are analysed by the microprocessor, which displays the results within five seconds.

Auto calibration is achieved by use of highly stable sensors. The initial calibration is performed after warmup, with subsequent ones automatically activated at appropriate intervals. The automatic calibration process can be manually activated (no calibration gases are required).

An illuminated four-line graphical display is used to show the results. Oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen balance are shown as percentage concentrations, along with pass/fail messages if the limit sets are activated. Oxygen results below 10% are resolved to a precision of 0.01%, enabling very exact measurements of residual oxygen.

Four sets of limits, that are user programmed, are provided to detect a pass/fail result of the analysis. Each set may be easily selected as required.

1000 results can be stored (concentrations, time, date) and downloaded to a personal computer using optional software. The data can be read by all leading spreadsheet packages for analysis, printing etc.

A fast external printer is available as an option to provide a timed and dated hard-copy of the analysis. Both printing and storage functions may be switched on and off by the operator.

Two sampling methods are provided, pumped or syringe. Firstly, the built-in pump can be used to withdraw a sample from a pack using the sample probe supplied. The probe is suitable for single-handed operation, and the pump can be programmed to withdraw volumes of 5ml to 90ml. Alternatively, a manual syringe can be used to inject a sample through a septum port. When using this method the sample flow is automatically detected and the analysis automatically produced 5 seconds after the end of the sample delivery.

A comprehensive set of sampling accessories and consumables is also provided.

The GIR250 is designed to monitor percentage levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in a single, robust unit.

Based on our galvanic (electrochemical ) cell measuring principle for oxygen measurement, and the infra-red principle for carbon dioxide, the GIR250 provides a permanent display of both gases up to a resolution of 0.01%. The instrument can be pre-programmed with pass/fail criteria for each of the gases, and results can be transferred to external recording/logging devices using the 4-20mA outputs.

The key design philosophy is to provide a simple to use, reliable instrument providing accurate repeatable results over the whole of its range. Calibration is very simple using the front panel keypad and can be carried out with little or no training

The GIR5500 range analysers are ideal for biogas applications. Typically, the biogas is a mixture of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) together with oxygen (O2) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S), which have implications for plant efficiency and safety.
Our GIR5500 range analysers are designed to provide reliable and accurate measurement of gases, helping to optimise plant productivity and improve plant availability.

Methane and carbon dioxide are both greenhouse gases (GHG), which are of environmental concern. Methane is an important fuel gas for CHP engines but if not used as fuel, then the methane is flared off to produce carbon dioxide. Therefore, the CH4 / CO2 balance can help to confirm effective anaerobic digestion. The GIR5500 uses NDIR sensor technology to measure methane and carbon dioxide. These are sensors specially designed to withstand the damp, corrosive atmosphere often found in these applications.

Oxygen is an important process indicator for both landfill and digester gas. In landfill gas, a low O2 reading can be indicative of an underground landfill fire, whilst a high reading may indicate over extraction from the site. In digester gas, a high O2 reading indicates that the process is no longer anaerobic, which may be due to a decrease in microbial activity or possibly, inward gas leaks. For effective O2 measurement, we use a special long-life electrochemical cell designed for use in the presence of acidic gases such as carbon dioxide.

Hydrogen sulphide is present in landfill and digester gas in varying amounts depending on the substrate composition. Hydrogen sulphide can be extremely corrosive to generator sets and continuous measurement can prevent costly damage. We have developed a unique system, which allows for continuous measurement of H2S whilst still achieving good sensor life at ≤ 2000ppm H2S.

One important factor in biogas analysis is the nature of the gas sample. The composition and condition of biogas can vary and often has a high level of moisture and particulates. Therefore, sample conditioning needs to be considered. The GIR5500 includes integrated particulate filters, sampling pump, sample flow indication and a low sample flow alarm as standard plus the enclosure contains a heater to help prevent condensation. An external coalescing filter is highly recommended and cooling options can also be offered to remove water.

By their very nature, biogas and landfill applications are hazardous environments. The GIR5500 range is designed for use in Zone 2 hazardous areas in accordance with Council Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX Directive); EN 60079-0:2009 and EN 60079-15:2010.

These are hazardous area applications by their very nature. All GIR5500 versions are designed for use in Zone 2 hazardous areas according to the Industry Code of Practice ESA ICoP Edition 2, a decision endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive in the UK.

The GIR5000 gas landfill monitoring system is a gas analyzer unit for measuring and monitoring the concentrations of oxygen and methane in landfill gas and biogas. As an option, the concentration of carbon dioxide can also be monitored. Used for:

Sample conditioning in the basic unit is provided by an external coalescing filter and water catch-pot assembly. When the external temperature is below 35oC (the internal temperature of the analyser) this technique is the most economic. For situations where the sample temperature at source is significantly higher than the ambient temperature, and the sample is saturated with water, an optional sample cooler can be fitted.

Analogue outputs and alarms are provided for all gases measured.

The sample flow is monitored and alarmed by an electronic flow meter. Adjustment and indication for the flow is provided by a front- panel mounted indicator and needle valve arrangement. The system is suitable for sample pressures down to 2Ombar gauge. A pump is available as an option for samples with a lower source pressure.

Enhanced safety is provided by an optional flammable gas detector and shut-down system. When this option is fitted, any leakage of a flammable gas within the analyser’s enclosure is detected, causing the power to be shut off from the instrument, and simultaneously causing a solenoid valve to stop the sample flow. A set of volt free relay contacts is used to indicate this situation. For further security the system must be reset manually from this condition.

An IP667-rated wall-mounting GRP enclosure is used to package the instrument. The LCD, alarm indicators and sample flow meter are clearly visible through the windowed door.

Easy service access is provided by mounting the electronics and parts of the sample handling system on an internal hinged door, and the sample filter externally.

IR600 in-situ analyzers continuously monitor carbon dioxide or methane in concentrations ranging from 100% down to ppm levels. Features include a dual wavelength sensor, remote sampling, digital readout, adjustable level relay outputs for alarm and control purposes, and minimal maintenance.

High performance is guaranteed by the infra-red sensor which makes use of a reference wavelength as well as a sensing wavelength, thus maintaining accuracy over long periods without the need to recalibrate.

An internal pump draws gas samples into the sensor through a particle filter from an intake which can be located at distances up to 30m from the monitor. The intake can be fitted with a moisture exclusion unit for use in wet environments.

A choice of seven concentration ranges from 0 to 100% down to 0 to 3000ppm (0.3%) is available for carbon dioxide monitoring and a choice of three, 0 to 100%, 0 to 30% and 0 to 10% for methane monitoring.

Readings are displayed by a 4-digit clear and unambiguous liquid crystal display. Two fully adjustable set points with associated volt free contacts provide signals for separate alarms or appropriate control systems when carbon dioxide or methane concentrations reach set-point levels. The alarm values are displayed by pressing a button, which provides easy interrogation and setting.

The sensor and electronic components are housed in a tough plastic enclosure rated at IP54 (ingress protection against water or dust).

Routine maintenance is limited to occasional filter replacement and gas calibration. Both are simple and quick procedures.

The KK650 is designed specifically for measuring hydrogen and chlorine gases within the chlor-alkali industry. Hydrogen measurement is our field of expertise, but this application is not straightforward. Hydrogen levels are low and the mixture is not binary. In addition to the hydrogen and chlorine; oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide are also present. These are referred to as the ‘inerts’. At start-up, the gas stream mainly consists of nitrogen purge gas with a gradually increasing percentage of chlorine.

All types of chlorine plant can be monitored by one of two models which differ in the hydrogen range and resolution (see specification). Each provides accurate monitoring of the process gas from start up to normal running.


How it Works

The KK650 uses two measurement sensors together with a third, sealed reference sensor. The process gas is passed across the first measurement sensor, then through a small heater where hydrogen is reacted and then across the second measurement sensor, which measures the thermal conductivity of the reacted mix. The unique design of our software algorithm and dual sensor katharometer, allows the analyser to interpret and calculate the hydrogen, chlorine and inert gas components of the chlor-alkali process gas and ouput both hydrogen and chlorine values.


Calibration

Calibration of chlorine analysers normally requires the handling of hazardous gases by highly trained personnel. The KK650 can be calibrated using the standard chlorine and chlorine/hydrogen mixtures but it also offers alternative calibration methods, which overcome the problem of handling hazardous gases.

The KK650 offers the advantage of being able to be calibrated using benign or surrogate gases; Argon for chlorine span and Hydrogen in air for hydrogen span. These gases are non-hazardous and can be readily obtained, thus simplifying the calibration process.

Alternatively, the KK650 can be calibrated using the process gas; assuming that the composition of the process gas is known and that there is confidence in analysis of the process gas as provided by other analysers (e.g. gas chromatographs).

The K6050 range gas analyzers accurately measures the changes of one constituent in binary or pseudo-binary gas mixture, i.e. mixtures in which only one constituent changes. Examples include hydrogen, carbon dioxide, argon, helium and various halogenated hydrocarbons such as the Freons. Almost any single constituent of a gas mixture can be measured providing its thermal conductivity differs from that of the other components. Ranges from high ppm to 100% are possible depending on the gas being measured.

A non-depleting maintenance free katharometer sensor measures the thermal conductivity of the gas. The sensor incorporates a highly sensitive element of low thermal capacity. Signal processing is provided by a microprocessor to give a level of accuracy and a range not normally associated with this type of sensor. Little or no calibration is required because of the system’s inherent high stability.

A built-in sample pump means that samples can be drawn from low-pressure sources or can be naturally aspirated. An integral needle valve and flow indicator are used to control the sample flow through the analyzer.

Dual-gas measurement is provided by the KG6050. It combines the measurement abilities of the K6050 with oxygen measurement by electrochemical cell. Concentration ranges from 100ppm to 100% of oxygen are available, depending on the application.

True portability is achieved from sealed rechargeable batteries, which offer 6 hours continuous operation. Extended operation is possible by running the unit with the battery charger connected. The whole instrument is housed in a tough co-polymer waterproof case with carrying handle.

A large, alphanumeric LCD shows measured values and also displays messages and prompts for the menu driven configuration and calibration routines. These procedures are simple and straightforward.

K1650 - Hydrogen Purity Monitor for Power Station Alternator and Turbines Purge (Panel Mount)

Application

Modern power station installations often use Hydrogen gas, with its excellent thermal conductivity properties, as the coolant medium for high capacity turbo generators or alternators; with the efficient performance and safe operation of the plant being critically linked to the gas quality used. During the commissioning and decommissioning of the alternator it is essential that the hydrogen is safely introduced and purged. Therefore, air must first be purged from the system by an inert gas such as carbon dioxide (CO2). The hydrogen coolant is then introduced and replaces the purge gas. To decommission the turbogenerator the purge sequence is reversed. During daily operation, the hydrogen purity must also be monitored to ensure that the H2 has not become contaminated by air leakages. Not only will air ingress produce a potentially explosive atmosphere but it will also affect the viscosity of the H2 coolant gas, increasing drag and hence, windage losses. The Alternator Purge Gas Monitor series measures all stages of the fill-purge cycle as well as measuring hydrogen purity during normal operation.

Principle of Operation

The Alternator Purge Gas Monitor uses the proven katharometer technology from the K1550 analyser range. The katharometer comprises two chambers, each with an identical thermal conductivity sensor. One chamber is sealed and is filled with a reference gas whilst the other receives the sample gas. The difference in thermal conductivity of the reference and sample gases is translated into a concentration via an internal algorithm. The inherent stability of this system and integral temperature compensation, make the instrument one of the most accurate available.

System Description

The K1650 fixed analyser consists of display /controller unit, pre-mounted in a panel for easy retrofitting and a remote sensor assembly. The remote sensor assembly consists of a katharometer supplied in a wall mounting, IP65 enclosure complete with flowmeter and sample flow control valve. The sensor is certified to European standards for use in Group IIB + H2 gases, and the zener barrier interface, incorporated in the display/controller unit, allows ‘live-working’ on the sensor unit.

The K1650 analyser has three pre-configured ranges to enable measurement of hydrogen purity plus all stages of the purge cycle: 0 to 100% CO2 in Air; 0 to 100% H2 in CO2 and 80 to 100% H2 in Air. For sites using nitrogen or other purge gases, please contact us for an alternative solution.

Two concentration alarms provide visual (LED) indication and volt-free changeover contacts. They are user configurable for function (High, Low or Off) and hysteresis value.

A high-level 4 to 20mA output is provided; the span can be user programmed on most models.

The instrument is packaged in a standard DIN panel-mounting enclosure (96 x 144mm) with an optional locking door to IP54 sealing standard. The sensor can either be mounted within the enclosure or remotely, depending upon the application.

Options

For hazardous area applications, the sensor may be mounted remotely in the hazardous area and connected to the electronics unit in the safe area through a suitable MTL intrinsically safe interface.

For sampling, a variety of systems is available and any necessary pumps, filters and take-off tubes can also be supplied.

If oxygen measurement is also required, the KG1550 is a dual gas analyser which measures oxygen and one other gas.

The Z4010 fully auto-ranging portable oxygen analyzer measures a wide range of oxygen concentrations from percentage levels to less than ppm in clean nonreactive gas mixtures. The zirconia oxygen sensor has a fast response time of less than 5s for a 90% change.
