Intrisically
Safe Ethernet for Zone 1 hazardous areas
INTRODUCTION Until now, installing Ethernet, especially
wireless access points, in classified areas had the two challenges
of being “live worked” and having a reliable power supply.
MTL and CSL have finally solved this
problem with a new range of Power Over Ethernet (POEx™) series
of products for both the coal mining and hydrocarbon industries.
Working in much the same way as a galvanic isolator, an isolating
module is placed in a safe area with one port to the potentially
explosive field and the other port is as a conventional RJ-45
connection.
However, unlike other suppliers of Intrinsically
Safe Ethernet, the MTL isolator is just one component of a suite
of products suitable for mounting with appropriate environmental
protection (i.e. IP67) in Zone 1.
