The 9378-FT Fieldbus Terminator provides 'far end' termination of the trunk cable for the the 9370-FB fieldbus Barrier when used in fieldbus networks. Specially certified connectors allow the 9378-FT to be removed and replaced while powered in a Zone 1 hazardous area.
9376-SP trunk surge protector
The 9376-SP Trunk Surge Protector prevents surges and transient over-voltages induced on the trunk of the fieldbus network from damaging the system's internal components such as the Fieldbus Barrier Module and terminator. Like the 9378-FT, it can also be removed and replaced while powered in a Zone 1 hazardous area.
FS32 surge protector
For maximum protection, the FS32 Surge Protection Device prevents surges and transient over-voltages conducted along the Spurs of fieldbus systems from damaging the the fieldbus barrier module.

Surge Protection Devices

FS32

The FS32 surge protection device prevents surges and transient over-voltages conducted along the Trunk or Spurs of fieldbus systems from damaging the associated electronics such as terminators, spur blocks and the bus control equipment. Designed to fit MTL’s latest fieldbus products in order to protect spurs, the FS32 can also be used to protect spurs on Megablock wiring hubs. This space saving design helps to reduce the size of junction boxes and ease installation. In operation the FS32 does not adversely affect the performance or operation of the fieldbus or connected equipment. It allows signals to pass with little attenuation while diverting surge currents safely to earth (ground) and clamping output voltages to safe levels.

Ethernet Modbus Gateways

Modbus is the standard used for communication between a wide range of industrial devices, including PLCs, DCSs, HMIs, instruments, meters, motors, and drives. Although Modbus can be used for both serial (RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485) devices and newer Ethernet
devices, the serial and Ethernet protocols are so different that a specialized gateway is required for one protocol to communicate with the other. Moxa’s MGate™ products are specially designed to integrate Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU/ASCII networks. MGate™ MB3000 products support one or two Ethernet connections, and up to four serial ports.

The MGate™ line of Modbus gateways includes products that support these advanced features:

  • Multiple masters
  • Priority control
  • Smart routing
  • Serial redirector
  • Powerful Windows Utility

Integrated Backplane solutions

MTL provides a complete design and manufacturing service for backplanes. Customised backplanes give the vendors and users of process control and safety systems the opportunity to integrate MTL4500 series IS Isolators and MTL4840 series HART® modules directly into their system architecture. As there are no hazardous-area circuits on the backplanes, customised versions can be produced without the need for IS certification, so simplifying design and lowering costs.

Redundant FISCO Power Supplies

Since their introduction in 2002, the MTL simplex FISCO power supplies and wiring components have become the definitive solution for intrinsically safe fieldbus, and have been chosen by influential end users to protect major hazardous area networks worldwide. Plant operators have been able to take advantage of the benefits of a fully live-workable field network without the onerous restrictions on segment loading and maximum cable length that were imposed by earlier IS techniques. The existing product portfolio has established MTL’s credentials as technical leader for intrinsically safe fieldbus.

With the introduction of the 910x series of power supplies, MTL are the first company to offer true redundancy for the FISCO concept, which will provide the highest level of reliability for critical hazardous area applications.

MTL4840 Series

The MTL4840 HART connection system is the system of choice for unrivalled flexibility. Based on 16 channel modularity the system can be easiliy expanded to cover up to 7936 HART devices on one network. The flexibility of the MTL4840 and its ability to communicate with any of the Instrument Management Software (IMS) packages on the market today allows MTL to offer the optimum solution for any application - both general purpose and Intrinsically Safe.

The HART multiplexer provides the brains of the system. Its is a combination of two modules, the MTL4841 - HART communications module and MTL4842 - HART interface module. They provide the HART data interface between smart devices in the field and HART instrument management software running on a PC. The modules, which mount on the BPHM64 HART backplane, connect to the field devices via either HART connection units or IS backplanes depending on the application.

HART Software

Powerful instrument management software is being widely adopted by the process industry to provide detailed process and maintenance information for a broad range of HART field devices.

The online access to the information contained within HART devices allows users to diagnose field device troubles before they lead to costly problems. Software such as AMS, PRM and FieldCare can capture and use diagnostic data from HART field instruments via the MTL HART connection hardware. This allows users to realise the full potential of their field devices to optimise plant assets, which results in significant operations improvement and direct maintenance savings.

For communication with those software packages that are based on the FDT technology a Communications DTM is needed and can be downloaded free of charge.

The MTL Generic Comms DTM (Device Type Manager) enables MTL HART connection systems to pass HART data to any Instrument Maintenance Software (IMS) packages utilising the FDT/DTM concept. Aimed at Instrument and Maintenance Engineers who wish to continue to save costs by utilising on-line HART data, the Comms DTM software is developed to the latest FDT specification v1.2.

Customised Solutions

One of the simplest and most cost effective methods of integrating HART CONNECTIONS into a traditional point to point Process I/O solution is to install a customised HART connection board in place of the normal DCS Field Termination Panel.MTL manufacture a wide range of customised backplanes and HART connection units to replace the standard DCS termination boards and provide direct pickup of the HART signal. The MTL HART connection units have all the features of the standard DCS termination board with the addition of the HART multiway connector which links the board to the HART backplane. Additional features can be added as required.

Redundant Fieldbus Power Supplies

Two flexible solutions for redundant fieldbus power conditioning.

  • F800 Series provides power for eight segments in a single F80x unit
  • F600A Series solution uses one FPS-IPM power conditioner per segment

The F800 Series carriers provide wire terminations for the 8 segments as well as mounting two F801 or F802 power supply modules. The F801 power supply modules provide 8 outputs of 21.5V, 350mA; ideal for most fieldbus applications. The F802 power supply modules provides 8 outputs of 28V, 500mA for applications with fieldbus trunk lengths greater than 600m or heavily loaded fieldbus barrier applications. Both options ensure that one Fieldbus terminator is included for each segment. The system integrates seamlessly with host controllers from all the leading DCS vendors.

The F800 carriers themselves are completely free of electronic components to maximize their MTBF and, of course, the System Availability. Additionally the F800 Series carriers occupy half the footprint of the previous generation of fieldbus power supplies offering significant cabinet savings. The F809F physical layer Fieldbus Diagnostics Module may be installed on any F800 carrier to automatically collect and distribute additional diagnostic information for each of the eight fieldbus segments.

The F600A Series option provides multi-segment fieldbus power using the FPS-IPM power modules. The FPS-x Series power conditioners provide redundant fieldbus power for a single fieldbus segment and are available with or without a built-in terminator. The MTL redundant fieldbus power supplies provide:

  • Redundant power conditioning
  • Redundant input power connection
  • Power module replacement without a reset
  • High power output
  • On-line diagnostics module (F800 series)
  • Power module or power feed failure alarm
  • Integrated fieldbus terminator
  • Simplified power wiring

Megablock series of Wiring Hubs

Megablocks are DIN-rail mounted passive hubs designed for use in FOUNDATION fieldbus™ and Profibus-PA segments. They can connect 2, 4, 8, 10 or 12 field devices to the network trunk cable.

Megablocks minimize hand wiring and allow individual devices to be added to and removed from the segment without disrupting network communication. The SpurGuard™ option provides short circuit protection for the segment.

Hazardous area approvals permit installation in a variety of configurations in Zone 1 or 2 and Division 1 or 2. Within Zone 2 or Division 2, Megablocks may be installed as part of non-sparking (non-arcing) or energy-limited (non-incendive) circuits.

Additionally, SpurGuard™ versions have energy-limited spur connections, even if the trunk is classified as 'non-sparking', when fed for example from any of MTL's High Energy Trunk fieldbus power supplies.

Because a fieldbus segment must be terminated at the ends, why not use a Megablock with an integral terminator?

Tofino™ Hardware

OVERVIEW

The Tofino™ Industrial Security System is a new and unique, solution from MTL and Byres Security that addresses the important issue of protecting Industrial Networks from modern cyber-security attacks.

Simple to Install

The conventional approach is to employ a standard, but highly complex, “IT-style” firewall. Such methods are complicated and require highly-trained staff to install and manage them. Tofino™ was designed with its environment, the level of staffing and the needs of industry in mind. As a result, a field technician can simply attach power to a Tofino™ appliance, connect two network cables and then walk away – it’s that simple to install.

Centralised Control

From there, the company security staff can sit at a central management platform (CMP) and configure and monitor any system with ease, reacting to threats in a coordinated and company-wide manner. Best of all, the system has the flexibility to adapt to a small plant with a single PLC, or meet the needs of a multi-national organization with thousands of critical devices scattered around the globe.

Defence-in-Depth

By deploying Tofino™ security appliances directly in front of each control device (or group of devices) that needs protection, they provide SCADA and process control companies with a layered security solution for their systems. This in turn allows a “defence-in-depth” strategy to be used, so if a hacker or virus penetrates or bypasses a main corporate firewall, they will still be faced with an array of SCADA-focused security devices that need to be breached before any damage can be done.

AS-i Megablock Series

AS-i Megablocks are DIN-rail mounted passive hubs for the AS-i network. They connect several AS-i devices to the network trunk cable and provide short circuit protection to the segment. The AS–i Megablock itself does not contain an AS–i chip or communicate over the AS–i network, so it consumes no network communication resources (bandwidth, slave addresses, etc.). They are used to interconnect AS–i master and slave devices that do contain AS–i chips.

Megablocks minimize hand wiring and allow individual devices to be added to and removed from the segment without disrupting network communication. The SpurGuard™ option provides short circuit protection for the segment.

Terminators

The fieldbus standard requires busses to be terminated at both ends. In many applications, one terminator is built in to the power conditioner, which is usually located near to the control system. The second terminator is either integrated into the Megablock or fieldbus barrier wiring component or added in the form of a separate DIN-rail mounted unit.

Terminators are clearly marked with a large 'T' making them easy to identify in-situ.

Industrial Wireless Ethernet

If your application uses mobile equipment that is controlled via a TCP/IP network, or the cost of installing cable conduits on your site is prohibitive, then you should consider setting up a wireless local area network (WLAN).

The IEEE 802.11 standard is an established technique using RF technology to transmit ethernet data packets over the air. Applications that utilise TCP/IP will run on 802.11 compliant WLAN's in the same way as they do over conventional hard-wired networks.

By common agreement between the regulatory authorities, a WLAN transmits over unlicensed spectrums with only minor variations from country to country.

Rackmount Ethernet Switches

Ethernet has already penetrated into the industrial environment, and is widely adopted from control rooms to controllers and devices on the shop floor. Industrial Ethernet is not only being used in a wide range of vertical markets, but is also finding uses in different facets of each market. For example, IEC 61850-3 industrial Ethernet networks are applied as the physical medium for power substation automation, which means that a host of legacy field buses must be connected to the Ethernet network. The bottom line is that Industrial Ethernet is becoming the future trend for automation communication.

Different vertical markets require different solutions, which is why Moxa developed two distinct rackmount Ethernet switch product lines. The new PowerTrans PT series IEC 61850-3 rackmount Ethernet switch series and IKS industrial rackmount Ethernet switch series were developed to meet the needs of a variety of applications.

MTL8000 1/1 Bus Interface Module (BIM)

The Bus Interface Module (BIM) supports connection to Profibus-DP masters. The LAN medium is implemented as intrinsically safe RS485, supported via an IS interface in the safe area. Multi-dropping of nodes is possible in both the safe and hazardous areas - up to 13 remote I/O nodes may be multi-dropped in the hazardous area from one intrinsically safe interface unit. Each BIM has a single Profibus LAN.

Where supported by the host system, a second BIM may be added to implement redundant LAN media and BIM capability. An IS interface unit is required in the safe area for each LAN.

The Bus Interface Module is easily configured from the Profibus-DP master with the user parameterisation capability of Profibus. The system is also capable of supporting Profibus-DP V1 which will allow more flexible configuration options with DP V1 masters. With masters using FDT/DTM based configuration over Profibus-DP V1, a single database holds configuration of the controller, I/O and HART field devices, offering, in an open system using MTL8000 I/O, one of the key benefits of a DCS.

Bus Interface Modules (BIM’s)

An MTL8000 node uses a Bus Interface Module (BIM) to communicate with the host controller via a local area network (LAN). Different BIMs can be chosen to operate with a range of popular fieldbus protocols. The BIM mounts on a carrier and receives all of its communication and power links from it. The BIM uses the RS485 communications standard. Other alternatives are RS422, by changing switches (where available) on the carrier, or RS232 by fitting an in-line converter. Switch options sometimes offer alternative methods for terminating the LAN. Some BIMs also have a second LAN connection to maintain communications in the event of damage occurring to the main communications link.

MTL8000 Railbus Isolator

The Railbus Isolator module provides galvanic isolation between the 2/2 and 2/1 sections of the Railbus, thus preventing fault voltages on the general purpose (2/2) section of the Railbus from invading the parts that have IS field wiring. A Railbus Isolator is required only in nodes that contain IS field wiring. The Railbus Isolator mounts on its own carrier and is placed in the line of carriers immediately before the first (2/1) carrier that will carry IS field wiring. It is usually followed by an 8920-PS-DC IS module power supply (on its own carrier) which provides power for the 2/1 I/O modules.

MTL (SR) Series

Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) is not a new concept. It has long been the practice to fit protective systems to industrial process plants wherever there is a potential threat to life or the environment if something should go wrong. What is new is that IEC61508 now provides guidelines for achieving an adequate Safety Integrity Level (SIL) for systems, sub-systems and components.

  • Backplanes with bussed power - MTL4000 Series
  • Certified HART® connectivity - MTL4840 Series
  • ‘Clip-on’ DIN rail mounting - MTL5000 Series

The new MTL4000-SR, MTL5000-SR and MTL4840 HART®-SR products come with certified reliability data, giving the safety system designer a known quantity around which to design. The SR-Series Isolators cover Digital Input (DI), Digital Output (DO) and Analogue Input (AI) functions. These SR labelled products are supplied with the knowledge that their integrity will be maintained during the life of the product. Any changes to standard versions will not compromise the certified characteristics of these products as they will be maintained as individual products.

In addition to the certified products, MTL have all other products in the MTL4000 and MTL5000 ranges assessed to the IEC61508 standard. These have been third-party assessed by Exida and the reports can be viewed, along with the SR certification.

MTL8000 Field Terminals

A field terminal is a replaceable unit used to terminate field wiring and link it directly to the I/O module. By separating the terminal block from the module, a damaged terminal block doesn't mean replacement of the module. Any required field device power can be provided via the module to the field terminals, so no further patching is required. The modules have recommended field terminal types, not only to maximise usability but also to maintain safety, by preventing the wrong type of module from being connected to the field devices. Other key benefits include:

  • Fuses or loop-disconnects for protection
  • Mechanical keying for correct module identification
  • Blue field terminals to identify IS field wiring
  • Tagging strip for easy identification of field device wiring
  • Built-in cold junctions for field thermocouples

MTL8000 Module Carriers and Cables

Carriers are the building blocks on which the MTL8000 system is assembled. They distribute the basic power supply services to the modules, and provide the communications route between the Bus Interface Module (BIM) or Controller and the I/O modules. Most carriers can be mounted on DIN rail or directly to a flat surface and may be joined end-to-end to extend the size of an installation. Multipin connectors at the end of each carrier carry the system power supply and internal 'Railbus' communications across to the next carrier. All I/O module carriers have their own independent grounding busbar, with screw terminals, to terminate the screens/shields of field-wiring cables. At each end of the bar there is a separate terminal to enable it to be linked to other carriers, or to the system ground, as required.

MTL8000 1/1 BIM

The Bus Interface Module (BIM) supports connection to Profibus-DP masters. The LAN medium is implemented as intrinsically safe RS485, supported via an IS interface in the safe area. Multi-dropping of nodes is possible in both the safe and hazardous areas - up to five remote I/O nodes may be multi-dropped in the hazardous area from one intrinsically safe interface unit.

MTL8000 Software

The 8455 software is one of the methods for configuring Profibus and Modbus Bus Interface Modules (BIMs) in an MTL Process I/O™ node. It runs on a PC, under the familiar WindowsTM operating system. The PC can be linked to the BIM using either a local cable link or via a secondary LAN connection, where available. The BIM is the interface between the I/O modules and the host controller, and must be configured to permit correct operation. The BIM needs to be told the identity of each I/O module fitted and values of relevent parameters. Parameters must also be defined for LAN communication with the host controller.

  • Windows™ Explorer - style interface
  • Used to configure Bus Interface Modules
  • Local or remote configuration via LAN
  • Dynamic viewing of real-time data
  • Single project file for mulitple nodes
